M is for Morning #A2ZChallenge24

Our question today is “Are guinea pigs more active in the morning or the evening?” I’m Victor, and I’m going to try to answer this.

Morning or Evening?

I suppose if you’ve met some other animals, you’ll know that some tear around and do all their eating in the day, and some do it all at night.

Naturally, we’re different. We do it all the time.

But that’s not true, really, because we take lots of naps.

I mean LOTS of naps.

But Mummy doesn’t get many photos of us sleeping because we’re prey animals, and we’re always on the look-out for possible danger, even when we’re sleeping. She hasn’t got a picture of me yet, although she has tried!

Mummy has her day-night pattern

Mummy cleans us out and cuddles us in the morning, so we’re all awake for that. Then it’s breakfast, after which we’ll have a nap.

I’ve never counted how many naps I have in a day, but by evening time, when it’s time for cucumber treats, I’ll be wide awake and telling mummy it’s time. And of course if we go out on the grass during the day, we’ll make sure we get plenty of grass inside us before stopping for a nap. Then when we come in, we’ll generally nap again, if it’s not already cucumber time.

So the first part of the evening, when Mummy’s active again, probably on the computer, we won’t be napping, but when she goes to bed, we nap. Then we wake up in the early morning, especially if the moon is bright, and go back for another nap before Mummy wakes up.

Mummy knows we have night activity, because sometimes we’ve been in the same room at night with her, and she has heard us having a drink from our water bottles.

So, I hope that answers your question. It makes us ideal companion animals, really, as whatever your pattern of awakeness is, we can probably fit in with you.

Love

Victor

  1. Naps are wonderful things, especially if others let you take them! I remember one of our piggies liked to be up at night gnawing on her things. Load gnawing. She was in my daughter’s bedroom, so that was not good!

  2. Sleep is good. That is an interesting fact that you cannot catch them napping because of the prey animals ability to become alert to what is going on around them. Visiting from A to Z  annbennett2.blogspot.com
