J is for Joshua – an #atozchallenge post

Blogging from A to Z

Hello, Bertie here.

I’m very excited because today I’ve got an interview with our friend JOSHUA.

We thought of this ages ago when we first decided to do the A to Z Challenge once a week, so I haven’t had to think of any more words beginning with J.  I don’t think we know any piggies beginning with J, although we have several Auntie JULIEs, and I’m sending love to each of you from each of us.

JOSHUA is a degu, and we told you about them for the letter D.

Hello Joshua and welcome to George’s Guinea Pig World.

First of all, please tell us – who are your companions and what are their favourite things?

There are the human caretakers.  The Mummy human mostly hangs out with us, or does reading or writing.  She does messy craft projects and cooks yummy smelling foods too.  The Daddy human mostly does things on his computer thingy, watches TV, or cleans up the Mummy human’s messes.  He cleans up our messes too.

I used to have three brothers: Jacob, Jasper, and Jenks.  Yep, all four of us had “J” names.  We looked a lot alike too.  But they went across the rainbow bridge a couple of years ago.  Now it’s just me in my cage.  Continue reading “J is for Joshua – an #atozchallenge post”

D is for Degu, and for Midge’s anniversary

2019 A to Z badge

Hello!  Bertie here.  We’re blogging from A to Z once a week, through to September. Mummy says it’ll take us that long, but we need to spend more time eating grass outside, and not stuck in front of the computer.

D is for Degu!

I have a blogging friend who’s a degu.  It’s a small furry animal (like me) but not like me, as he has a long tail and he climbs very well, and he’s quite a lot different in other ways too.

Say hello to Joshua the Degu!

Degu Joshua Zigler

He’s a handsome chap, isn’t he? Joshua interviewed me and Roscoe on his mum’s blog.  My mum says we can interview him later in the year.  Maybe I for Interview.  But this is what I’ve found out about Degus.

  • Degus come from Chile originally
  • they are classed as rodents
  • they are even more sociable than guinea pigs!
  •  they have long silky coats, grey-brown in colour, and a long, thin tail with a tufted, black tip
  • they live to about 8 years old, although I think Joshua is older
  • they are supposed to typically weigh 300 gms.  That’s tiny compared with me.  I weigh 1500 gms.  I haven’t asked Joshua how much he weighs.
  • they are inquisitive and intelligent and have lots of different squeaks and sounds

Well, that sounds a lot like Joshua to me!

D is also for Death

This weekend was one year since Midge died.  That was a horrible evening.  Mummy went out to her bird meeting, and while she was away, Midge went all funny.  He lived with Percy in the run next to me, where Neville and Roscoe live now.  He started twitching and shaking, then he rolled over on his side and kept twitching. It was horrible, because Percy and I could do nothing.  Then Mummy came home and said hello to us, saw Midge, picked him up and cuddled him tight, and phoned the vet. Then she took him downstairs and stayed up all night with him, but he died in the morning.

We were very sad, but she let us sit with his body and say goodbye to him.  Actually, I found it very scary and didn’t really want to sit with him, but Percy told me to say goodbye or I’d regret it when I was older, and understood better.  I think he was right. I made sure I said goodbye to Percy when he went a month or so later.

I don’t like it when someone dies, but Percy said it’s natural, and everyone dies sometimes.  And then we go over the Rainbow Bridge to the place where everybody’s well and happy, and we can be with our friends again.

And Joshua says he understands because all his degu family have died, too.  That’s very sad.  But he has other friends to keep him company.

So that’s our post for D and next week we’ll do E which might be for exercise.  I think Eating would be better.

Have a nice week!

love

Bertie

Slimmers World part 2 and my bid for stardom

Way-aye there, Roscoe here again.

Hope you’re all doing well.  We’ve had nice sunshine the last couple of days, and Mam hasn’t been wearing lots of clothes (plenty but not lots of woolly ones).  She says it’s only February so don’t expect to go out on the grass yet.  But I know there’s photos of past piggies on the grass in February, so I’m getting me hopes up.

Mam is very disappointed with our diets.  I think she’s disappointed with her own, to be honest, since she tries hard during the week and then she says it all goes wrong at weekends.  I told her we should dole out her food, but she doesn’t listen.

Mind you, this starving us hasn’t had much effect so far.  It’s hard to tell though, because if you’ve just had a wee it could make you weigh a lot less.  Mam’s done something clever with her pictures to give you this chart of our weight loss over the four weeks.

our weights Feb 16

Neville’s line is at the top.  You can see that after the black line that shows when we started these slimming things he’s dipped below the 1700 gms line.  So maybe it’s helping him.  He certainly comes and stretches up for his cucumber and things from Mam, so maybe that’s helping.

The next line is Biggles. I don’t know what he’s eating, but he’s not been losing any, and Mam’s very disappointed with him.  She says he’s a bit more active though.  Bertie’s the next one down. If I was feeling kind I’d say he’s lost a bit in the last couple of weeks, but since he put it on to start with, he’s only a tiny bit less.

And then there’s me.  I’m the lightest of us anyway.  Mam says that’s no excuse, I’m heavier than ‘huge Hugo’ ever was.  I suppose that bursts my bubble a bit, but not much.  I was doing well till that birthday party, so I reckon we can blame it all on your cake, Mam.

Mam says we’re continuing with the diet till we’ve got through all the special food.  Well, it’s fairly tasty when you get used to it, so that’s okay.  I miss the occasional carrot though.

I’m a star!

It’s an exciting week coming up, ‘cos I’m on Furkid Friday this coming Friday.  Don’t miss it.  This is the link, but don’t click it till Friday as it won’t work till then.  You get to meet Joshua, and he interviews me, and there are pictures, too.  You’ve probably seen the pictures before, mind.

And here’s Joshua in his cage!

Degu Joshua Zigler

…and we’re still thinking about Auntie Tori, who says she’s had her operation and is home recovering.  Get well soon, Auntie Tori ❤

Bertie and Percy

I’m being interviewed by Joshua!

Hello everyone.  Happy New Year.  Bertie here.

We had a nice new year.  I’m not sure what new year is, but it was nice.  Mummy stayed up late one night last week because she said there might be fireworks, but there were only a few and they weren’t too noisy.

Something exciting happened this week.

Mummy received an email asking if Joshua could interview me for his blog post!

We’re always very happy to read Joshua’s comments on our posts.  I’m sorry I’m not very good at answering them.  Mummy has to do complicated things so I can do that, so I just click the ‘like’ button.  It says liked by Mummy, but it’s really me.

four month old Bertie with his uncle pig Percy, showing Percy's lump on his cheekAnyway, Joshua sent all his questions across and I answered them, and Mummy helped me find the best photos for it.  I wanted one of me with Percy.  Mummy said “wouldn’t you like one that shows you off in all your glory?” And I said, “no, the one of me and Percy on the chair would be good.”

I miss Percy.  But I’m not missing him as bad as I used to.  Mummy says that’s normal, and she feels the same way.

Soo, you’re going to have to wait to read my interview, because it’s going to be out on Friday 22nd March.  That’s a long time away yet.  I’ll remind you nearer the time.  I’ll try and get a picture of Joshua to show you some time.  He’s not a guinea pig. Mummy says he’s a daygoo, but apparently that’s spelt degu. Well, I suppose guinea isn’t spelt ginny, so I’ll let him off.

Have I shown you the picture of me with cousin Dani?  I look extremely handsome in this one.  Dani looks extremely pretty too.  We make a great couple, don’t you think?  Even if Dani does have ratties, not guineas.
