Augustus (Gussie) 2016-2024

Augustus with Auntie Dawn
Gussie with Mom, 2019

We had the sad news from Auntie Dawn, that Augustus, otherwise known as Gussie, went over the Rainbow Bridge on Monday night. He had been under the weather for a couple of days, and a scan showed a lump on his shoulder consistent with lymphoma, and his respiratory and GI systems were shutting down. He was seven and a half, which is an excellent age, but he will be much missed. It is especially hard for Dawn and Wayne after losing Peepers last week.

Run free dear Gussie ❤️

Vet report on Victor

Victor (the Red)

Victor may give you updates on medications himself, but blogging will probably continue as normal as far as your correspondents are concerned.

I started to connect the evidence of a spider mark behind his ear, a scratch that went crusty and wasn’t healing, and a mark like a mole on his hip which was obviously irritating him. The vet’s verdict was a suspected melanoma.

Rather than take a number of samples for analysis, we are going to proceed with treating things as they come. He is on antibiotics in case that crusty scratch is benign and clears up. If it doesn’t I will give him palliative care (as with Percy) and take further steps to give him the best options for quality of life. Fingers crossed that developments will be slow and as pain-free as we can make them.

Thanks, everyone, for your kind words.

I’m trying to remain focused on the fact that we had Gussie for 7.5 years, which is two years more than we had the second-longest-lived pig — the late, great Saku. We were very lucky.

That’s a great pic of Gussie! He was in his loafish prime.

Kisses to Victor. I hope that the ear scratch is benign and that the mole can be managed or treated.
