What do guinea pigs EAT?

Hello! This is Victor the Red and it’s my first post in the A to Z Challenge. I’ll tell you more about myself in the letter V. A few points for you:

I’m Victor the Red to distinguish me from Victor the First. I’m nothing like him except for the name.

I’m ginger with lovely red eyes. I’m very like George, who started this blog, and his brother Fred – in looks, anyway.

EAT is a great post for me, because I Eat for England. And I’m also answering the questions on what we like to Munch and to Nibble!

What do guinea pigs eat?

Guinea pigs should eat something like 75% hay and grass, 15% fresh veg, 8% pellets, and 2% treats.

Mummy gives most of our treats as grass or fresh veg. We get cucumber slices for treats, mainly. We also get dried grass called readigrass in winter, and dried herbs in winter and fresh in summer.

I also eat cardboard boxes, paper, anything Locksley leaves too close to the edge of his cage so I can steal it through the bars, and I usually test anything I find on the floor, just in case. Mummy tells me off if I try things covered in plastic, especially wiry things that are attached to things to make them work. This is why our wifi router went down (who bit through that wire? Me), why the remote sensors for the thermometers went missing (Roscoe did that), why plastic bags have holes in them (mainly Hugo), and why our blowing post has teeth marks in its cable (that was me, too, but Mummy forgot to take it out before floor time).

But if you want to make us really happy, put us out in a safe run on the grass on a warm spring day, and watch your grass get beautifully trimmed.

Beautifully mown lawn

  1. Your mum takes good care of you. Hopefully this post will help people understand Guinea Piggies need more hay than anything else. Too many just feed pellets and lettuce, at least in my experience from working in a pet store location of a ranch store. Yes, piggies sure love to eat!

I thought Victor could have said more about favourite veggies and stuff, but we’ve done a whole A to Z of veggies in the past, so… Actually putting in that warning about wires and plastic is a good thing.

Mummy’s had a new idea – to put together all six of our A to Zs in one book, as the A2Z Guide to George’s Guinea Pig World. What do you think?
