Hello, Locksley here. It was three years since Mummy adopted us from the Rescue on Saturday, and by coincidence this week is Guinea Pig Awareness Week, and they are specially promoting the work of Rescues.
They are also talking about the five basic needs of guinea pigs, or at least of all animals and how it applies to guinea pigs. They are talking about one each day.
You might be asking who ‘they’ is. It’s Burgess Pet Care in conjunction with lots of other people. Including vets and guinea pig rescues. Mummy watched a presentation by John Chitty (Dr Rebekah’s former boss) and Burgess were talking about their new food for indoor pigs. Mummy is thinking of getting it for us because it has things that our Profibre has, and I love the Profibre. She needs to get some more, so she thought she might try this food instead. If it tastes of dandelions, it should be okay, I reckon.
Mummy doesn’t do everything that they say we need. We don’t live in a herd. We’d definitely fight if we were all out in the same space at the same time. But we have our bachelor apartments, and I have floor time with Ludo, and then with Victor, because I get on with both of them, but not at the same time. And Pippin has decided to fight us all. Mummy thinks she must have messed up his socialisation, but then they said that should happen in his first six months, so I think Mummy missed that chance. Victor was about as good with baby Pippin as Ludo was with me. Sigh. Maybe Pippin will get better as he gets older. Mummy says he’s being very friendly and relaxed with her these days.
Another thing Mummy doesn’t do is take all the house plants away. In fact the banana plant has been outside for summer, and she’s just brought it in. It lives in the door-window of our room. We can reach up and pull the old leaves off. It’s very tasty. Mummy says she checked and banana leaves are fine for us. She wouldn’t put any plants in our room that would make us sick.
But other than that I think Mummy’s guinea pig awareness is very good. I’ll let you know what happens about the dandelion flavoured food.
We had a little time outside on the grass this week. Well, yesterday, just before it got dark. It’s been very wet most of the time. Mummy’s been very busy with the books and things this weekend.
Enjoy your week
love

PS The badges are all from the GPAW site.

I think your Mum is a model for guinea pig awareness. She takes really good care of you! As for Pippin, I think he’ll eventually grow out of his anti-social behavior. Always nice to hear from you!

That’s a very informative site. Thanks for posting it, L. I’m going to bookmark it so I have it as a reference.
I haven’t done everything by the book either, but my boys are happy and healthy. Those kinds of sites describe an ideal situation. Then the human adapts the information as needed for their specific situations and pigs.
Some pigs are just going to be ornery, and you have to let them be. I’m thinking of a certain black-and-white-crested duo of memory. Sometimes I’d look at Mariusz, shake my head in dismay, and say, “Ok, dude. Do whatever you want. Just don’t hurt yourself.”
You have to love the ornery ones.
I love you, boys! XOXO
