Hot, hotter, hotter, then thunder

Hello, Locksley here.

There’s a road Mummy went down last week, called Locksley Lane. It’s about two miles away. I’m very proud of this honour.

It has been very hot. Mostly outside. Mummy left our door to the garden open on several nights, to make sure our room got as cool as possible. She had her windows open, too, except for the front, because she didnt want to risk a burglar coming through them. She opened those when she got up in the morning. Then as soon as it started to get hotter outside, she closed everything up so we kept the cool air inside. We also had our curtains closed to keep the sun from coming in and heating us up. It worked very well. We were nice and comfortable.

Then when the sun had gone down and it was no hotter outside than in, we went out in the garden. Walking on the grass always seems cooler somehow. We stayed out until the birds were singing their late evening song, as it stays light very late at this time of year. It’s two weeks to the Solstice, you know. That’s the longest day of all. Mummy could hear blackbird, robin, greenfinch, dunnock, woodpigeon, collared dove, house sparrow, goldfinch, linnet, and further away, nuthatch, woodpecker and blackcap. There are also jackdaws and rooks, and magpies. But they just make loud noises. I don’t call that singing.

The robin is still very demanding, and sometimes he flies straight at Mummy, but I think that’s by mistake because she’s coming round a corner, and he’s heard her but not seen her. He swerves at the last moment. Mummy is very confused that he’s been doing this for so long and there’s no sign of any young robins (or blackbirds) about. After all the mealworms he and the blackbirds have had, there ought to be at least ten babies around, she thinks.

So anyway it got very hot on Saturday, when Mummy was out all day at a book fair. She was very tired when she came home, but still put us outside when it was cooler. She said it was over 30 degrees both Friday and Saturday. That’s around 90, Auntie Noelle. Too hot for us. Although it was only 24 inside, which is nice. She had a nap when she got in, although she did give us some cooling lettuce she’d bought on the way home. She had a bowl of ice cream to cool her down.

Then Sunday, it was all clouded over. Still pleasantly warm, so Mummy gave us our morning cuddle outside, at her outside table, and then put us on the grass for our run. That was lovely. We came in when it got warmer, and even cloudier, and then we had a little bit of thunder. Then later on we had a lot of thunder, and lightning, and rain. Mummy wanted the rain to come, but she says it won’t be enough for the plants she wants to put out. It’ll be a start, though.

Sometimes I don’t think Mummy’s ever happy with the weather. It’s due to be sunny and hot again this week, though.

I hope it’s nice wherever you are and you are enjoying the right temperatures for you.

love

  1. Hi Locksley! I heard from another blogger that you were having some real heat, and I know air-conditioning is not common in England and on the continent. We vacationed there during a really hot spell one year and although we managed, there was one day when I thought I would have a heat stroke. Your Mum is doing exactly what my mother did when I was growing up in New England – opened everything up at night and then closed up during the day. In Cleveland, we had a huge fan and that sucked cool air in at night. It sounds like you are weathering the weather in good condition and I hope cooler temps come your way soon.

That’s great they named a lane after you.

It’s been pretty hot here too. I’m OK with it, but Mummy isn’t so happy. She likes cold for some reason. I’m a hot weather kind of animal, and especially like when it gets hot like this because Mummy gives me extra cucumber and is more likely to treat me to bits of fruit when it’s hot like this, because she worries I won’t stay hydrated, plus she likes having those things herself when it’s hot and usually gives me a little when she’s having some. Even the dogs get to have some of the stuff, but apparently there are more rules about what fruits and veggies the dogs can have, especially since one of ours has a sensitive tummy. Oh well, more for me and Mummy. I do wish she wasn’t so strict on my fruit portions though…
